Zufluchtsort

Se assustou com a palavra do título? Não se preocupe, que eu vou explicar porque ela se tornou uma das minhas palavras preferidas na língua alemã! Como você talvez já tenha ouvido, alemão tem muitas palavras lógicas, que descrevem exatamente o que elas são - avião é "coisa de voar" e luvas são "sapatos de mãos" - então vou explicar as partes da palavra primeiro:

Flucht é fuga, palavra muito usada para descrever fuga de guerras, por exemplo.

Zuflucht é abrigo, refúgio.

Ort é lugar.

Ligando os pontos, Zufluchtsort é lugar de refúgio! 

Agora você deve estar se perguntando o que a palavra tem de tão legal que se tornou uma das minhas preferidas. A primeira vez que a ouvi, foi em uma das músicas na minha igreja (vídeo no fim do post), onde a letra diz que Deus é nosso Zufluchtsort. O refrão é:

In Dir steh ich auf festem Grund Mein Anker und mein Zufluchtsort Und ganz egal was auch geschieht Mit Dir will ich nach vorne geh’n Deine Liebe bleibt besteh’n

Tradução:

Em Você eu estou em solo firme Minha âncora e meu refúgio E não importa o que aconteça Eu quero seguir em frente com você Seu amor durará

Vários dos Salmos na Bíblia usam a mesma palavra para descrever a Deus, como esse: 

"Tu és o meu abrigo; tu me preservarás das angústias e me cercarás de canções de livramento. Pausa"
Salmos 32:7

Nesse versículo, abrigo é traduzido como Zufluchtsort. Então, as traduções da palavra seriam sempre refúgio ou abrigo. E daí?

Quando eu penso em refúgio, me vem à cabeça a imagem de uma fortaleza de pedras, de um bunker ou de uma caverna em uma montanha. Abrigo me faz pensar nos ginásios cheios de colchões no Brasil quando alguma tragédia acontece, ou em algo como os orfanatos. Já dá para imaginar que fica difícil eu conectar essas imagens à uma característica de Deus, apesar de eu saber que as palavras significam mais do que as fotos desconexas na minha cabeça representam. 

Bom, no início do texto, eu expliquei que Flucht é fuga. E foi aí, ouvindo a música em alemão e pensando na palavra, que eu entendi que Deus é Zufluchtsort: o lugar para onde eu fujo. Não necessariamente uma fortaleza na montanha ou um ginásio aquecido, e ao mesmo tempo, muito mais do que um refúgio ou abrigo: Ele é o colo para onde eu fujo, o abraço que me envolve e protege, o amor que me cerca quando o mundo só tem ódio e tristeza.

Deus foi muito gracioso comigo quando me presenteou pais que também são meu Zufluchtsort, pais que sempre têm e tiveram colo para onde eu podia correr quando tudo estava dando errado, então pensar em Deus como meu pai amoroso e lugar de fuga não é tão difícil. Mas esse não necessariamente é o seu caso: talvez você queira é fugir da sua família, fugir do seu emprego, da sua vida acadêmica, dos seus amigos. Talvez você queira tanto fugir que você não consegue pensar em nenhuma imagem na sua vida que te remeta a um lugar seguro para onde você possa fugir. Deus também pode e quer ser o lugar para onde você foge nesse caso! Porque, não importa quanto a gente tente traduzir o amor de Deus para imagens terrenas, não existe nada que expresse inteiramente a grandeza desse amor.

Não importa em que lugar você esteja na sua vida agora, 

du kannst nie tiefer fallen als in Gottes Hand.

você nunca pode cair mais fundo do que na mão de Deus.

Were you scared by the word of the title? Don't worry, I'll explain why it has become one of my favorite words in the German language! As you may have heard, German has many logical words, which describe exactly what they are - plane is "flying thing" and gloves are "hand shoes" - so I'll explain the parts of the word first:

Flucht is escape, a word often used to describe escape from wars, for example.

Zuflucht is shelter, refuge.

Ort is place.

Linking the dots, Zufluchtsort is a place of refuge! 

Now you're probably wondering what's so great about that word that it has become one of my favorites. The first time I heard it, was in one of the songs in my church (video at the end of the post), where the lyrics say that God is our Zufluchtsort. The chorus is:

In Dir steh ich auf festem Grund

Mein Anker und mein Zufluchtsort

Und ganz egal was auch geschieht

Mit Dir will ich nach vorne geh'n

Deine Liebe bleibt besteh'n

Translation:

In You I'm on firm ground

My anchor and my refuge

And no matter what happens

I wanna go forward with you

Your love will last

Several of the Psalms in the Bible use the same word to describe God, like this one: 

"You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance."

Salmos 32:7

In this verse, hiding place is translated as Zufluchtsort. So the translations of the word would always be refuge, shelter or hiding place. So what?

When I think of refuge, the image of a stone fortress, a bunker, or a cave on a mountain comes to mind. Shelter makes me think of the halls full of mattresses in Brazil when some tragedy happens, or something like orphanages. You can probably already imagine that it is hard for me to connect these images to a characteristic of God, although I know that the words mean more than the disconnected pictures in my mind represent. 

Well, at the beginning of the text, I explained that Flucht is escape. And it was there, listening to the music in German and thinking about the word, that I understood that God is Zufluchtsort: the place where I run to. Not necessarily a mountain fortress or a heated hall, and at the same time, much more than a refuge or a shelter: He is the lap I run to, the hug that wraps and protects me, the love that surrounds me when the world has only hate and sadness.

God was very gracious to me when He gave me parents who are also my Zufluchtsort, parents who always have and had lap where I could run to when everything was going wrong, so thinking of God as my loving father and place of escape is not so difficult. But that's not necessarily your case: maybe you want to run away from your family, run away from your job, your academic life, your friends. Maybe you want to run away so much that you can't think of any image in your life that represents a safe place where you can run to. God can and wants to be the place you run away to in that case too! Because no matter how hard we try to translate God's love into earthly images, there is nothing that fully expresses the greatness of that love.

No matter where you are in your life now, 

du kannst nie tiefer fallen as in Gottes Hand.

you can never fall deeper than in the hand of God.
